Cardiff meet update
11th-Jul-2009 09:54 am
KingIanto
Hi everyone, in light of the last couple of days and the new series I thought I'd do a quick post about the meet. I had considered cancelling it with all the bad feeling going around but I have decided that it must go ahead.

Furthermore instead of it being about what has just happened and where things are going we should celebrate where it has been and the awesomeness that has been acheived. I am not ready to leave a fandom that has given me so much quite yet, we have no way of seeing what will happen next we just have to wait and see.

I do however fully understand if anyone who was down to come now wants to pull out.

So that is Cardiff meet Friday 14th August - Monday 17th August.

Any takers please comment.

In addition I think that we should plan to do something to let it all out while were there. I was talking to one of my LJ friends last night and she thinks we should do a book of condolences/ good luck for Gareth which I think is a nice idea and also plan something maybe on the sunday; so keep your eyes peeled and we'll announce something later on.

I will get off my soap box now and welcome comments.

As I'm going to finish my research project two weeks earlier than expected, I can actually come to the meet-up! CoE took a lot of the fun out of it, though... :S

Maybe we could go to the BBC building and drop a huge bag with coffee sachets? (savecoffeeboy.) Peaceful protest and all.
11th-Jul-2009 05:25 pm (UTC)
Yay (: It has taken all the fun out of it but I still want to go to Cardiff but I may have to put CoE out of my mind for now as its making me sad. We could do that if you fancy it. That comm looks just right for what everyone wants...

I'd really like to come along as I love visiting Cardiff for a start... :)

My work situation is really erratic right now but as far as I can see my calendar is free that weekend. I hope it stays that way!
11th-Jul-2009 05:26 pm (UTC)
If you let me know once you know that'd be great, I'll put you down provisionally. Cardiff is fantastic to visit and there is still a chance for much squee
11th-Jul-2009 11:18 am (UTC)
I'm still coming.
11th-Jul-2009 05:27 pm (UTC)
Yay (: I've been very worried all week in case noone wanted to or if people were wanting to boycott Cardiff!
11th-Jul-2009 01:13 pm (UTC)
Def still coming, alread booked the hostel!
11th-Jul-2009 05:27 pm (UTC)
Cool. I'm really releived, I've been so paranoid all week
11th-Jul-2009 02:13 pm (UTC)
I'll still be coming. The writers can do what they like to the show but fandom will live on!
11th-Jul-2009 05:28 pm (UTC)
Yay. I really hope the fandom survies as everyone is so unhappy and I can understand why they'd want to leave. I just want to celebrate the happy bits really...
11th-Jul-2009 05:39 pm (UTC)
I'm still coming. Nothing gonna stop me.
11th-Jul-2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
Yay. I was worried in case people decided to leave the fandom and weren't interested any more.
12th-Jul-2009 11:41 am (UTC)
OH NO!!! Not that weekend! BLOODY HELL. That's the only weekend I'm going to be away - at Writers' Con. *bangs head on desk*

I'll be home sometime Sunday, though, so is much planned for Sunday evening/Monday?
12th-Jul-2009 11:43 am (UTC)
Awww, I'm sorry. Its been difficult getting a suitable weekend in august sadly. On sunday I was planning on doing stuff around the bay area and there will be some of us around for at least some of monday if you'd like to join us?
12th-Jul-2009 11:44 am (UTC)
Can I just ask.... is there any sort of vague idea of what time people intend on leaving on the Monday? I need to book my train but I don't want to leave far earlier than everyone else/end up in Cardiff on my own for hours.
12th-Jul-2009 11:56 am (UTC)
I don't know about people in general but I'm planning on leaving mid afternoon on the monday. So that I can do anything in the morning with anyone left, I was considering maybe visiting the castle. Then have lunch and there be enough time to get home at a sane time. Does this help? I'll have a think at putting together a schedule during the week and posting in case that helps more...

Not sure whether anyone has mentioned this already (apologies if so), but the second meet-up of the Torchwood Forum (www.torchwoodforum.co.uk) is happening in Cardiff that same weekend - I'll be attending that, but I wouldn't be surprised if we all bump into one another at some point!

Anyway, I discovered from the Forum that Gareth is doing a book signing at Borders in Cardiff on Saturday 15th - might that be an appropriate time to give him the book? Just a thought...

I was aware oh it going on yes. Its good timing in some ways. I think we may all end up together at some point and can probably arrange something if peopkle want!

We are definitely planning on going to the book signing and are strongly considering there would be a good time to give this to him. Just so long as Borders don't object (:

Hopefully we'll get to see you (:

Visiting the castle sounds like a good idea.

I went for the first time since I was a child, three years ago with a visiting friend but we didn't have time to go the keep - we would have made time, no doubt, had it been after Exit Wounds!
I've been wanting to go back.

Cool. I'll have to find out the costs for that then, I know I had it a while back but they're probably changed! I've never been despite many trips to Cardiff so maybe it should be done (:
12th-Jul-2009 12:53 pm (UTC)
Hi. I live in Australia so yeah, the meet-up is definitely not a possibility for me but I was wondering if I could make a contribution to the book for Gareth somehow. Maybe write a letter to him and send it to you via email to be printed off and included in the book. I would really like to tell him how much I loved Ianto and also wish him good luck in the future. Would that be possible? :)
12th-Jul-2009 01:08 pm (UTC)
Hey, that is the main purpose of doing the book as we know not everyone can get to such events but still want to do something. We've set up an email address jones.ianto.jones.007@googlemail.com and welcome any contributions to what we are putting together. So if you send through what you want and we'll include it in (:

I don't know any of you but I'd love to meet up with some other Torchwood fans!

I actually live here in Cardiff so if anyone has any questions about things to do or where to go I'd be happy to help out. A good place to start might be visiting a few of the pubs that have been used for key scenes - I believe Tiger Tiger was "Bar Reunion" in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for example.

Obviously a trip to the Bay has to be done, and there are loads of nice restaurants and cafes down there for the obligatory cups of coffee

Yay (: We've done meets in Cardiff before but more local knowledge is always really good especially for food places (: I'm hoping to put up a plan of action at some point this week so keep your eyes peeled (:

Oooh thanks for that. I'll have a look and see what I can do (:

Kudos to all you who've posted. You seem like such a positive group! I hope the signings and meet-ups go well. After things like the "James Moran incidents" that have forced him to back away from fandom, I've become a bit paranoid that anything I've posted regarding fans expressing their opinions at signings would be misconstrued.

So I'm trying to post a comment at the "signing" and "meeting" threads to assuage my paranoia. I hope that the events go well and are positive outpourings of support for the actors, not anything disruptive. I think it's sweet that you want to put together a book for GDL.

If I ever get to Cardiff, I hope to meet up with some Torchwood fans there. I hope the signings go well and are positive experiences for you, as well as for the actors.
14th-Jul-2009 08:51 pm (UTC)
We'll let you know what happens afterwards but hopefully it'll go well. I'm trying to portray a positive message about Torchwood. Yes I'm unhappy at some of the outcomes of the last series but it happens, we just have to move on.

If you ever get to Cardiff there are loads of local fans who I'm sure would love to meet up with you and you never know it could coincide with meets too (:
13th-Jul-2009 03:31 am (UTC)
So glad you decided not to cancel the meet-up, since I've been looking forward to it - I still want to see the Torchwood site and Gareth's concert, but getting together with other fans was going to be half the fun, and a lot of my incentive for adding Cardiff to my UK trip. Though I do feel a little trepidation - since I loved series 3, I'm going to feel I can't discuss it with anyone. I may be avoiding discussions. Be kind, everyone, okay?
14th-Jul-2009 08:54 pm (UTC)
Hopefully we'll all have a good time and it won't be disrupted by some of the bad feeling that is going around. Don't worry about other people reacting to you loving it there are bound to be other who did too. As far as I am concerned noone should be nasty to someone with a different opinion on something as if we were all the same life would be boring right?
14th-Jul-2009 08:30 pm (UTC)
Hi, I'm really interested in getting together with other TW fans, but it'll be my first time, so I don't know the protocol about these things. If I book it early enough, I'll have no trouble getting time off work for it. Pls let me know the particulars so I can get booking and planning (I'm one of those people who can't step out of the house without planning where to go and how to get there!)...
14th-Jul-2009 08:49 pm (UTC)
Hi, you're most welcome to join us. There will basically be things going on from about friday lunchtime till about monday lunchtime. If you want to be part of it all that's great, its just a case of turn up each day, but if yuo want to go off and do things on your own at various points thats absolutely fine. You will need to book your own accomodation for all the nights you're staying but we can recommend places people have been before if it helps.

Does this sort of help? If you have more questions feel free to ask.

Oh and are you over 18?
16th-Jul-2009 06:07 pm (UTC)
Dude! I may be behind the times but did you know that Gareth is doing a gig at TJ's in Newport on the friday night? Maybe we could all go to that too?
16th-Jul-2009 06:11 pm (UTC)
Its ok. We plan to go along to it, well at least anyone that wants to (:
18th-Jul-2009 12:18 pm (UTC)
Heya! A friend and I put our names down when the date was the weekend after, but we can now do the weekend of 14th- 17th...So I;d like to put our names down if that's ok? Or is it too late now?

xxxxx
18th-Jul-2009 03:28 pm (UTC)
It is never to late to put your name down, unless the meet's already happened. I'll add you and your friend to the list. I'm about to do another post on this so check the comm in a little bit.
